The Animal Genome Size Database provides an accessible compilation of published genome sizes (haploid nuclear DNA contents, or "C-values") for both vertebrates and invertebrates. Created in 2001, the database now includes genome size data for more than 4,000 species. In addition to genome sizes (in picograms), the database provides taxonomic information, chromosome numbers (where available), and details of methodology for each entry. Real-time summary statistics and outlinks to other databases are also provided.

The database underwent a complete redesign in late 2005 and was launched as Release 2.0 in December of that year. It now includes user-friendly browse, search, and data download functions, a discussion forum, and up to the minute summaries of the available information.

The creation and maintenance of the database has been supported by various scholarships, fellowships, and grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to TRG. Release 2.0 was designed and coded by James Nicol of Glossopteris Web Design, Sydney, Australia (http://www.glossopteris.com).
